DESCRIPTION :

Will Dean and Guy Livingstone founded Tough Mudder in early May, 2010. Tough Mudder was built on a culture of innovation. It started by shattering preconceived notions of fitness, health, and mass participation sporting events, creating a worldwide community. Tough Mudder is engineered so that teamwork isn’t just encouraged—it’s required. TMHQ grew to nearly 150 employees working across three offices world wide. Expansion of Tough Mudder brands included the launch of Tough Mudder 5K, Tougher and Toughest Mudder, and the launch of Tough Mudder Boot camp. With this rapid expansion larger offices were mandatory.

  • Maintaining the collaborative style of the company with supporting elements such as comfortable meeting spaces and sketching tools.

  • Integrating the most up to date, modern technology as a requirement.

  • Infusing biophilia and natural light into the private and public offices with small decorative hints of greenery throughout the office.

  • Creating collaborative spaces outside of the cubicle office.

GOALS

SOLUTION STATEMENT

The concept of the bicycle system will be carried out in the office space, highlighting the different subsystems that make a bicycle move. Maintaining the collaborative style of the company with supporting elements such as comfortable meeting spaces and ample lighting selections. The curvilinear forms in the wheels and the straight lines within the frame of a bicycle system will reinforce the different systems throughout the office. The 2nd and 3rd floors both have a radial shape around the stairs to support collaboration. Creative and collaborative work will be the forward motion of the office system and company. Biophilic elements such as the live wall in reception helps the founders of the company remember where the start of the company and what its grow into today.

The 2nd floor meeting space is a space where employees are encouraged to collaborate as a team outside of their private cubicles. Monitors on the wall are accessible if teams want to present ideas through technology.

The 3rd floor work cafe is a space where employees are encouraged to collaborate as a team outside of their private cubicles.  It is also a space where employees who work remotely, or at home, have a place to set up when they come into the office.

PERSPECTIVES

Although team work is imperative in the Tough Mudder community, individual desks are still a must have. Steelcase sit to stand desk allow for comfortable work places that are grouped by different departments on each floor.

The third floor perspective demonstrates the spiral staircase in the Tough Mudder office. Located to the left of the stairs is a private gathering space with technology, white boards and other collaborative tools to help employees visualize their ideas.

Another team work, community space that provides  a little more privacy for small groups. This furniture incorporates booth seating a privacy panel that help reduce noise from the conference room located behind it.

The Tough Mudder mission statement encourages teamwork and communication between all systems in the company. Creating a community work cafe was a great tool in supporting that claim.
